Damaris Tighe is a member of a somewhat occult group of intellectuals. As she tries to write about ancient Greek archetypes, the others in the group imagine these archetypes into the real world with disastrous effects.
They then take on the attitudes and psychic imperfections of the group members so that a positive image in one person's imagination becomes a nightmarish transformation in another's.
Eventually Anthony Durrant restores order by transforming into another Adam, naming the beasts and defining their roles.
